After many years of advocacy from grassroots organisations, including Safe Child Africa and our partner - Basic Rights Counsel Initiative - we are delighted to announce the signing of the Child Right Amendment Bill 2023 into law in Cross River State, Nigeria, repealing the 2009 Child Right Law that was silent on child witch branding.

The law is now known as the Cross River Child Right Law 2023, criminalises the branding of children as witches and corporal punishment in schools and at home.

Congratulations to all the activists, lawyers and survivors who have sacrificed so much to help make this happen.

Our challenge now is to work to ensure that it is properly implemented and those guilty of this crime are arrested and prosecuted. To this end, Safe Child Africa is working hard to help ensure this happens and will be posting some exciting news updates here very soon.
